K-5 Procedures
K-5 students check books out each week. They are not allowed to have more than one book at a time, so students not returning their books are not allowed to take others home.
Each K-5 student has a name tag that has their library number on it. When they learn their number, they get a big sticker on the front. Each week they return their book, they get to put a small sticker on the back. They LOVE to count their stickers! In December, any student with no more than 2 weeks of not returning their books on time receives a treat. This is repeated in May for books checked after Christmas.
K-5 students check books out as soon as all books have been checked in. During the check-out time, those not at the shelves play Hush Puppy with one of the library puppies. This helps remind them that the library is a very quiet place. After all students have checked books out and put stickers on their cards (see below), we have Story Time. Sometimes the document camera is used, allowing the pages to be seen on the screen. At other times, the children sit in front of the rocking chair for a story.
Students with no overdue books the entire year receive a Library Citizenship Award. Students with no overdue books from Kindergarten through 5th grade receive a trophy at Awards Day for this accomplishment.
