Grades 1 - 5 Procedures
Students in first through fifth grades all check out books weekly. First graders check out one book, but students in grades two through five are allowed to check out two books. All books are due back in one week, but can be renewed.
First grade students also have story time every week. Second graders have story time some weeks and library lessons on other weeks. Students in third through fifth grade learn how to find books in the library using call numbers and how to use the card catalog.
All classes are given a weekly conduct grade and overdue books are noted. This information is used to determine a "Top Dog" class at the end of the month. Classes with no overdue books receive a small certificate to post. If a class reaches 9 weeks with no overdues, each student receives a treat.
In Dec., any student who has no more than 2 weeks of not returning their books on time receives a treat. This is repeated in May for books checked out after Christmas.
Students with no overdue books the entire year receive a Library Citizenship Award. Students with no overdue books from Kindergarten through 5th grade receive a trophy at Awards Day for this accomplishment.
